Its’ county seat and largest community ( pop.7000) Williamston sits along the banks of the Roanoke River, and acts as a hub for two major US Highways, US HWY 64, a new high speed interstate like highway, and US HWY 17, a major north/south, east coast route. A low cost of living, an excellent educational system, a state of the art hospital, abundant shopping and recreational opportunities along with Martin County’s close proximity to metropolitan areas, make it an ideal place to live. Education
Schools
Martin County is very committed and focused on education. The county boasts four high schools which have never been consolidated. Our schools emphasize personal attention and small classes to bring out the best in students.
Higher Education 
Martin Community College is a public comprehensive community college serving primarily residents of Martin County and segments of Bertie and Washington Counties. The College provides quality post-secondary curriculum programs leading to an Associate in Arts, Associate in Applied Science, or General Education degree, diploma, or a certificate of proficiency. Also, at Martin Community College, students can complete their first two years of a four year college degree. The college also has a nationally known equine program. The only one of its’ kind in the state.
East Carolina University
A short 30 minute drive from Williamson will take you to Greenville, the largest city in Eastern North Carolina and home to East Carolina University.
For nearly a century, East Carolina University has served the people of North Carolina and the nation. From modest beginnings as a teacher training school, ECU has grown to become an emerging, national research university with an enrollment of more than 23,000.
Today, East Carolina is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina and offers 106

bachelor’s degree programs, 71 master’s degree programs, 4 specialist degree programs, 1 first-professional MD program, and 16 doctoral programs in our professional colleges and schools, the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, and the Brody School of Medicine.
Economy
Martin County has a strong business/manufacturing base; the area is characterized by a highly productive work-ready labor force North Carolina's industrial incentives combined with the assets of Martin County make this the perfect place for a business. Martin County is a major industrial/manufacturing area. The area is known for its progressive, pro-business local government. Industry has grown at a healthy rate and many out-state corporations have made sizable investments in the county. Largest employers include Weyerhaeuser (1500 employees) and Fruit of the Loom (Williamston Yarn Mill) and Syfan Inc. The county boasts 12 major manufacturing facilities that employ over 100 employees each.
Also, Greenville’s East Carolina University, Pitt Memorial Hospital, and DSM pharmaceuticals are major employers in the area.
Also Martin County is also very proud of is heritage as a farming center. This is still evolving today. Cash Crops include cotton peanuts tobacco corn and soybeans as well as livestock.
HealthCare
Martin General Hospital in Williamston is the county’s premiere hospital facility. This 49 bed facility has a 24hr ER, and 52 affiliated area physicians. Martin General is also affiliated with Pitt Memorial Hospital (Greenville 30-minute drive) and East Care, a critical care air and ground transport service, based at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Martin County also has physicians that practice in most areas of medicine, like general care, orthopedic surgery, cardiology, obstetrics, pediatrics, podiatry, optimality, and radiology.
Pitt Memorial Hospital 
Pitt County Memorial Hospital, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is the flagship hospital for University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Pitt Memorial is a regional resource for all levels of health services and information.
The hospital is a tertiary referral center and provides acute, intermediate, rehabilitation and outpatient health services to more than 1.2 million people in 29 counties. In an average year, about 33,000 inpatients and more than 266,000 outpatients are treated in our facilities.
